Al atornillar un tornillo en una pieza de madera, algunas fibras de madera se desplazan para dar paso al tornillo. En ocasiones, esto no supone ningún problema. En algunos casos, el extremo del tablero se agrieta para aliviar la presión. Al desplazar una cantidad de madera antes de atornillar el tornillo, los agujeros guía eliminan prácticamente este problema.
Cuando se trata de taladrar la madera, no hay segundas oportunidades. Si no hace bien la perforación, la madera puede partirse y no será posible cerrarla. Si va a utilizar tornillos, perfore primeramente un agujero con un diámetro ligeramente inferior al diámetro interno del tornillo.
Por ejemplo, si va a utilizar tornillos de 3,5 mm, pretaladre con una broca de 3 mm. El gráfico a la derecha puede usarse como guía.
